Visiting Colchester Gallery:
We are located at 35a North Hill, Colchester, among bars and restaurants set in picturesque Tudor and Georgian buildings and right opposite the Marquis of Granby pub.
Colchester Gallery is a few minutes walk from High Street, Colchester, and 15 minutes walk from Colchester North Railway Station. Buses from Head St and the station stop at Middleborough, two minutes walk away. We are also convenient to St John’s multi-storey car park. Disabled parking for one car is generally available.
Colchester Gallery is currently showing two collections of works by Georgie Roy.
The first, “Downunder” traces her adventurous holiday in Western Australia where she was particularly fascinated by the grass trees whose anthropomorphic forms inhabit the forests.
Along with the grass trees, the forests of Australia have melaleucas or paper bark trees, a type of myrtle which has bark that resembles multi-layered tissue paper, and can be pulled off in strips or sheets. Georgie has created a number of semi-abstract images using this bark. (Paper bark pictures are familiar in Australia, but not in England).
Apart from her suitcases stuffed with small paintings, Georgie also returned with boxes of marsupial bones to study, and for her students to draw. Some of these might be present at the opening on Saturday 24th June.
Also on display is a collection of Georgie’s recent works which include large nude studies in charcoal, and some charming small landscapes.
